G7 Ministers Pledge Action to Protect Global Energy

(MENAFN) G7 foreign ministers announced on Saturday that they are prepared to take "necessary measures" to bolster global energy supplies and ensure the security of maritime routes, including the critical Strait of Hormuz.

In a joint declaration, the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, along with the EU's High Representative Kaja Kallas, cited the International Energy Agency's March 11 decision to release stockpiles as an example of the type of measures they are ready to support.

"We reaffirm the importance of safeguarding maritime routes, and safety of navigation ... as well as the safety and security of supply chains and the stability of energy markets," the statement emphasized.

The ministers also strongly condemned Iranian assaults on energy infrastructure across Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Iraq, calling for their "immediate and unconditional cessation." They reiterated their backing for the right of the affected nations to defend themselves.

The G7 reaffirmed its long-standing stance that Tehran must never acquire a nuclear weapon, must stop its ballistic missile program, and "end its destabilizing activities in the region and around the globe."

Since early March, the Strait of Hormuz has experienced significant disruptions, reportedly in retaliation for US and Israeli operations in Iran that began on February 28. These strikes have contributed to rising oil prices and are said to have killed around 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
