Trump Claims US-Israel Strikes on Iran Prevented Nuclear Threat to Israel

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the recent military strikes carried out by American and Israeli forces against Iran were meant to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear bomb, warning that Iran might have launched an attack on Israel if Washington had not acted first.

Speaking during an event at the White House, Trump argued that the decision to carry out the operation was driven by concerns that Iran was close to obtaining nuclear weapons.

“If we didn’t hit within two weeks, they would have had a nuclear weapon,” Trump said during remarks at an event at the White House.

“And when crazy people have nuclear weapons, bad things happen,” he added.

Trump also emphasized that the United States moved ahead with the strikes before Iran had the opportunity to carry out an assault on Israel.

“I think if we didn’t do it first, they would have done it to Israel and give us a shot, if that was possible,” he said.

The US president further repeated his assertion that earlier American strikes on Iran conducted last June had significantly weakened Tehran’s nuclear program.

“It was a complete obliteration of their nuclear potential, and that set them back very, very seriously,” he said.

“Their leadership is just rapidly going. Everybody that seems to want to be a leader, they end up dead,” he added.

Tensions across the region have intensified since the United States and Israel launched a major offensive against Iran on Saturday, according to reports. The attacks reportedly resulted in the deaths of more than 900 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with several senior military officials.

Iran has since responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and several Gulf countries that host US military facilities, according to reports.
