Middle East Tensions Stall Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks, Kremlin Says

(MENAFN) Growing turmoil across the Middle East is now casting a shadow over efforts to advance a new round of Ukraine-Russia negotiations, with Moscow signaling Tuesday that a previously anticipated meeting in the UAE capital may be off the table for now.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed at a Moscow press briefing that neither a date nor a location has been locked in for the next session of US-brokered talks between the two warring nations.

"For obvious reasons, it is difficult to discuss the possibility of a meeting in Abu Dhabi right now. As soon as it appears, we will notify you," Peskov said.

When pressed on whether the escalating Middle East conflict had slowed Washington's engagement on the Ukraine file, Peskov was measured but candid — conceding that American officials are now stretched thin.

"We'll see; time will tell. So far, there are no indications on this," he replied when asked if the US has decreased its diplomatic efforts on Ukraine.

He did, however, acknowledge that the American side currently faces "more work" as a result of the widening regional crisis.

Three rounds of US-facilitated negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have taken place this year — two held in Abu Dhabi and one in Geneva. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested as recently as last week that a fourth round could occur in early March, once again in the UAE. Those expectations have since been upended by the sudden US-Israeli military strike on Iran, which has reshuffled diplomatic priorities across the region.
