Survey Reveals French Pessimism Toward 2026
The poll, carried out across 30 nations and published Monday, showed France ranking last worldwide in expectations for 2026. Only 41% of French respondents said they believe the coming year will be better than 2025, far below the global average of 71%.
French participants were also among the harshest in judging the current year. Roughly 85% described 2025 as a bad year for their country, compared with an international average of 66%, placing France alongside South Korea at the top of the pessimism scale.
In contrast, respondents in Malaysia and Singapore expressed greater optimism, with most saying 2025 had been a good year for their nations.
Despite widespread national gloom, many French individuals reported more positive personal experiences. About 55% said 2025 had been a good year for them personally, slightly above the global average of 50%.
This highlights a widening gap between personal well-being and perceptions of the country’s overall trajectory.
France’s national statistics office, INSEE, has previously observed a sharp rise in households that remain confident about their personal circumstances while remaining pessimistic about the nation’s future — a trend that has grown stronger since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Looking toward 2026, economic worries remain significant. Only 27% of French respondents expect their disposable income to increase next year, the lowest proportion among all countries surveyed.
