Guinea’s Doumbouya wins presidential election

(MENAFN) Guinea’s provisional election results show that acting President Mamady Doumbouya has won the December 28 presidential election, receiving 86.72% of valid votes in the first round.

The announcement was made late Tuesday by Djenabou Toure, head of the General Directorate of Elections (DGE), nearly 48 hours after polls closed. This vote marks the conclusion of the military-led transition following Doumbouya’s 2021 coup against then-President Alpha Conde.

Election authorities reported that the contest covered the entire nation, including overseas constituencies. A total of 16,730 voting centers and 23,673 polling stations were deployed across the country. Of these, results from 23,398 stations were processed, representing a coverage rate of 98.84%.

Out of 6,768,458 registered voters, 5,608,520 participated. This figure includes 5,448,191 registered voters and 160,329 voting under special provisions, resulting in a turnout of 80.95%, described by electoral authorities as “high.” Among the ballots cast, 310,589 were invalid, leaving 5,297,931 valid votes, or 94.46% of total votes.

The provisional results by candidate show Mamady Doumbouya of the GMD (Generation pour la Modernite et le Developpement) with 4,594,262 votes (86.72%). Abdoulaye Yero Balde of FRONDEG received 349,129 votes (6.59%), while Faya Lansana Millimouno of the Bloc Liberal garnered 108,117 votes (2.04%). Other candidates earned smaller shares: Hadja Makale Camara (FAN) 1.59%, Mohamed Nabe (ARP) 0.83%, Ibrahima Abe Sylla (NGR) 0.87%, Abdoulaye Kourouma (RRD) 0.56%, Elhadj Bouna Keita (RGP) 0.52%, and Mohamed Sherif Tounkara (MST-Renouveau) 0.28%.

In an official statement, the DGE said: “After centralization, verification and compilation of the provisional results of the first round of the Dec., 28, 2025 presidential election, acting in strict compliance with legality, it proclaims candidate Mamady Doumbouya, having obtained an absolute majority of valid votes, elected in the presidential election on a provisional basis.”

The declaration is provisional and awaits validation by the Supreme Court, which has exclusive authority to confirm the results. The court also has eight days to review any challenges or disputes.

Doumbouya, representing the GMD, significantly outperformed his closest rival Balde in a field of nine candidates, reflecting a fragmented opposition. The election effectively concludes Guinea’s post-coup transition, though many opposition leaders were sidelined or exiled, and some groups called for a boycott.
