Germany Criticizes US Entry Ban on HateAid Directors

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul denounced the US government’s decision to impose entry bans on the managing directors of HateAid, a German counseling organization that combats online hate speech.

Wadephul emphasized that the Digital Services Act (DSA), which governs online platforms in the EU, ensures “that everything that is illegal offline is also illegal online,” he wrote on the social media platform X.

He underlined that the DSA was democratically adopted by the European Union and applies only within the bloc, without extraterritorial reach. “We want to clarify other differences of opinion with the US in transatlantic dialogue in order to strengthen our partnership,” the minister added.

Former French EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, widely regarded as the architect of the DSA, is also among those affected by the US entry ban.

The US government justified the sanctions against HateAid directors Josephine Ballon and Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, along with three other Europeans, citing alleged censorship of US online platforms.

In response, Ballon and Hodenberg described the move as an "act of repression."

"We are not surprised. It is an act of repression by a government that is increasingly disregarding the rule of law and trying to silence its critics with all its might," they told the German news agency DPA.

They further argued that Washington is attempting to prevent US companies in Europe from complying with EU law, thereby “questioning European sovereignty.”
