Poll Shows Record Support for Austria’s Herbert Kickl
The poll, conducted by the Linz-based Market Institute, indicated that Kickl enjoys a 35% approval rating, marking a new high.
His party, the FPO, secured 37% support in the poll—nearly double that of the Austrian People’s Party (OVP), the party of the current chancellor, which registered only 19%.
“We have seen hardly any shifts in party preferences in recent weeks, which makes the responses to the chancellor question all the more striking,” wrote Market Institute Director David Pfarrhofer in commentary on the findings.
The survey showed that sitting Chancellor Christian Stocker now holds just 10% approval.
Pfarrhofer noted: “We have to go back almost 10 years in our time series to find a similarly weak rating for the incumbent.”
In third place was the OVP’s coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPO), with 18% support.
According to the data, only 6% of respondents favored SPO chairman and Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler as chancellor.
The poll also revealed that the OVP’s other coalition partner, the liberal Neos party, has a 10% approval rating, with 8% of respondents preferring party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger for the chancellorship.
