Muslim cemetery gets vandalized in Sydney with butchered pig heads
Police received notifications of the incident shortly before 6 a.m. on Monday. Officers responded, removed the animal remains, and launched an investigation, as stated by authorities.
The vandalism came after a mass shooting at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach, which left at least 16 people dead and many more injured. Police identified the suspects as Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed Akram, and confirmed that the attack is being treated as a terrorist incident.
Authorities also discovered explosives in a vehicle associated with one of the gunmen. Investigators reportedly believe the duo had pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).
Muslims regard pigs as ritually impure under Islamic law, making acts involving pig remains widely recognized as intentionally offensive.
Ahmad Hraichie, a well-known Muslim funeral director and longtime caretaker at the cemetery, which is managed by the Lebanese Muslim Association, condemned the incident as “senseless and hateful.” The Australian National Imams Council also denounced the attack.
Leaders within the Muslim community have declared they will refuse to carry out traditional funeral rites or accept the bodies of the Bondi Beach attackers in Muslim burial grounds, arguing that the violence contradicts Islamic teachings entirely.
A local Muslim man was praised for his courageous intervention, tackling one of the assailants and disarming him. Reports identified him as Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized. A fundraising campaign in his support reportedly raised nearly $1 million within hours.
