Colombia Suspends Intelligence Ties with U.S. After Caribbean Strikes
The Colombian leader disclosed the directive Tuesday via the social platform X, owned by a US-based tech corporation, stating the freeze would persist "as long as missile attacks on boats in the Caribbean continue."
"The fight against drugs must be subordinated to the human rights of the Caribbean people," he added.
The suspension follows revelations by CNN that the United Kingdom had previously terminated its intelligence-sharing arrangement with Washington amid fears that British data enabled deadly operations against suspected drug smugglers. According to the CNN investigation, UK government representatives contend these military actions—responsible for no fewer than 76 fatalities since September—breach established international legal standards.
Volker Turk, the United Nations human rights commissioner, condemned the operations as "unacceptable" and demanded an independent probe into what his agency characterized as "extrajudicial killings."
