White House optimistic of shutdown to end Wednesday
Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said, "Tonight, thanks to Republicans, the White House is very hopeful that this shutdown is going to come to an end. President Trump looks forward to finally ending this devastating Democrat shutdown with his signature, and we hope that signing will take place later tonight." Leavitt added that Trump might sign the bill publicly, as the shutdown enters its 43rd day.
The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the funding measure at 7 pm local time (2300 GMT) after the Senate approved it 60-40. The legislation maintains government funding at existing levels through January 30, while also incorporating three year-long appropriations packages for key agencies and reinstating federal workers who were furloughed during the shutdown.
The shutdown began on October 1 after negotiations over federal spending priorities stalled, leaving thousands of employees either furloughed or working without pay and forcing many government services to be curtailed. Democrats had pushed for extensions of health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and reversals to Medicaid cuts, goals that were not achieved. Republicans, however, agreed to a future Senate vote on the ACA subsidies set to expire at year’s end.
