Samarkand Hosts Celebration for World Turkic Language Day

(MENAFN) An event marking the newly established World Turkic Language Day was held on Tuesday in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Samarkand gained special attention when UNESCO, during its ongoing 43rd General Conference on Monday, officially declared December 15 as World Turkic Language Day.

The celebration, arranged by the Turkish Culture and Heritage Foundation, drew officials from various Turkic nations, representatives from co-sponsoring countries, and a wide range of guests.

Notable attendees included Kursad Zorlu, deputy chair overseeing relations with Turkic states for Türkiye's Justice and Development (AK) Party; Türkiye’s UNESCO envoy Gulnur Aybet; and Aktoty Raimkulova, head of the Turkish Culture and Heritage Foundation.

Speaking at the event, Zorlu emphasized the significance of the recognition, saying, "With this historic decision, it has been reaffirmed that the Turkish language is a living world language, with all its branches, in diverse geographies."

He further highlighted the depth of the language’s cultural influence: "Because throughout thousands of years of history, the Turkish language has transcended not only words but also the memory, emotion, and thought of a nation.”

Zorlu concluded by underlining the unifying power of the language: "The Turkish language is a common heartbeat that makes us who we are, uniting us in the same sentiment even if we do not know each other.”
