Poland Reports Intercepting Another Russian Spy Aircraft Over Baltic

(MENAFN) Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian spy plane over the Baltic Sea for the second time in just three days, Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed on Thursday.

According to media, Kosiniak-Kamysz said Polish MiG-29 jets were scrambled Thursday morning to intercept another Russian aircraft in the region.

The day before, on Wednesday, the Polish army reported that a Russian Il-20 had been flying in international airspace without a filed flight plan and with its transponder switched off.

"On October 28, 2025, a pair of on-duty MiG-29 Air Force fighters successfully intercepted, visually identified, and escorted a Russian Federation aircraft out of the area of responsibility," the army statement said, noting that the plane was conducting a flight over the Baltic Sea.

European officials have increasingly accused Russia of being behind recent drone incursions into their airspace, allegations Moscow denies.

Tensions surged following a Sept. 9 event when around 20 drones entered Polish airspace amid a mass strike on Ukraine, prompting NATO jets to join joint patrols with Polish forces.

Other NATO members in the region, including the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, have also reported similar airspace violations.
