Poland Approves NATO Deployment After Russian Drone Incident
(MENAFN) Polish President Karol Nawrocki on Sunday endorsed a resolution permitting the deployment of NATO forces in Poland in response to Russian drones entering the nation’s airspace.
"The President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, has signed a resolution authorizing the presence of a foreign military component from the state parties to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on the territory of the Republic of Poland as part of Operation Eastern Sentry. The President's resolution is classified," the National Security Bureau (BSN) stated on the US social media platform X.
Operation Eastern Sentry was revealed in Brussels by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Friday after drone breaches in Poland and Warsaw’s invocation of NATO’s Article 4.
Rutte noted that the operation seeks to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank in response to Russia’s maneuvers.
NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, explained that the mission will combine air and land defense measures to tackle a broad spectrum of threats from Russia.
“In the early hours of Wednesday, September 10th, numerous Russian drones violated Polish airspace. NATO’s air defenses were activated and successfully ensured the defense of NATO territory,” Rutte said.
“Although this was the largest aggregation of NATO airspace violations that we have witnessed, what happened on Wednesday was not an isolated case.
“Russia’s recklessness along our eastern flank is becoming more frequent. Drones have previously breached airspace in Romania, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Intentional or not, these actions are perilous and unacceptable,” he added.
