Dubai Completes First Test Flight of Electric Air Taxi
(MENAFN) Dubai has successfully completed its inaugural test flight of an electric air taxi, marking a pivotal moment for the region's commercial air mobility ambitions, according to the emirate's transport authority on Monday.
The trial, conducted by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in collaboration with U.S.-based Joby Aviation, took place at a desert test facility and was attended by senior officials from the transport and aviation industries.
Dubai’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, emphasized that the successful flight highlights the city’s commitment to pioneering mobility solutions and technological innovation. "We aim to make life easier for people and shape a city built around the needs of future generations," he stated.
The all-electric aircraft, which boasts vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities, can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h and has a range of 160 km. It can carry four passengers and a pilot, providing a quieter, eco-friendly transportation option ideal for urban areas.
The RTA has announced plans to open the first aerial taxi station near Dubai International Airport by 2026, with the journey from the airport to Palm Jumeirah expected to take just 12 minutes.
Joby Aviation CEO JoeBen Bevirt commended Dubai’s forward-thinking approach, remarking that the collaboration “brings clean, quiet aviation closer to everyday life.”
