Italian Leonardo Eyes Drone Market Growth with New Baykar Joint Venture

(MENAFN) Italian defense heavyweight Leonardo is setting its sights on dominating the drone industry, thanks to a newly formed partnership with Turkey’s Baykar, the company’s chairman revealed in an exclusive interview.

Speaking at the 55th Paris Air Show held at Paris-Le Bourget Airport, Stefano Pontecorvo expressed pride in the collaboration: “Let me say that we are very proud that we have been chosen by Baykar… as we have chosen Baykar and Baykar has chosen us as a partner,” he told a news outlet. “It is a terrific company, probably the best in the world.”

The joint venture, named LBA Systems and equally owned by Leonardo and Baykar, will focus on the design, development, production, and servicing of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Pontecorvo highlighted the significance of this partnership, emphasizing, “We are so committed to the partnership that we have today, for the first time ever in our history, a common stand with another company—and that company is Baykar.”

Looking ahead, he outlined bold ambitions: “We’re expecting to become a leading company in the drone space, and then we will build on that together.” He further added, “We will make an extraordinary product (…) for (the) European and world markets.”

Key to the joint venture’s portfolio will be Baykar’s Akinci TB3 and TB2 UAV models, alongside Leonardo’s own drone technology. Pontecorvo pointed out that the collaboration would center around a fixed platform, with Leonardo pledging to “contribute in the maximum way.”

Revealing the depth of their cooperation, Pontecorvo noted, “We work with a lot of Turkish companies, and we are very proud of working with Baykar.”

He underscored the shared dedication to innovation: “Baykar is, like us, very committed to technology, research, and development, so, together, we can do great things, and it will contribute very significantly to (the) European defense in a field in which Europe, starting with the UAVs, is lagging behind.”

Finally, he addressed the rapid pace of technological advancement, saying, “Technology moves very fast, so we are starting with a fixed platform to be able to start with these three, these four drones. I was a UAV as I was talking about."
