Italy Broadens School Smartphone Ban

(MENAFN) Italy has decided to widen its existing restriction on mobile phone usage in educational institutions.

On Monday, a new directive from the Education Ministry confirmed that, beginning the next academic year, the prohibition will now apply to high school students as well.

This policy previously affected only primary and middle school pupils.

According to a report by an Italian news agency, Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara signed the directive, which enlarges an earlier regulation that forbade the use of mobile devices during instructional time and school hours in primary schools.

The updated order now incorporates secondary schools into the scope of the rule.

"This measure has become urgent. It can no longer be postponed, given the negative impact of excessive or improper use of smartphones on adolescents’ health, well-being, and academic performance, as clearly shown by scientific studies," Valditara stated.

He emphasized the importance of this decision, citing growing concerns revealed by research and global institutions, which underline the necessity of tackling "alarming trends."

The new directive stipulates that cellphone usage will be allowed only under specific conditions.

These include circumstances where devices function as supportive aids for learners with disabilities or distinct educational challenges, or when required for personal reasons.

Additionally, mobile phones may still be used when integrated into the academic syllabus, especially within vocational training programs that concentrate on digital and communication technology.

This move builds on a previous directive issued by Valditara in July 2024, which had already prohibited cellphone use in primary and middle schools throughout the entire school day. That policy is set to be enforced starting with the 2024–2025 school year.
