South Korea’s New President Kicks Off First Oversees Mission to Canada

(MENAFN) South Korea’s newly sworn-in President Lee Jae-myung kicked off his first international visit on Monday by heading to Canada to participate in the G7 summit, according to a news agency from Seoul.

During his three-day trip, Lee will attend an expanded session of the G7 summit as an invited guest and engage in bilateral discussions with influential world leaders. This marks a significant milestone for the new president, arriving on the global stage merely two weeks after his inauguration.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung told reporters, "Through the occasion, President Lee aims to build rapport with global leaders and lay the groundwork for achieving tangible results on key issues, including trade."

A key highlight of Lee’s itinerary is a planned trilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, scheduled on the sidelines of the summit.
Ishiba, who has already touched down in Alberta for his inaugural in-person G7 meeting, is aiming for a crucial bilateral discussion with Trump centered on tariffs, according to a news agency from Tokyo.

The summit, which commenced Monday in Kananaskis, Alberta, takes place amid mounting international tensions, including the repercussions of Trump’s tariff strategies and escalating conflicts in the Middle East following Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iran.

Among the early arrivals was Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who held talks with the summit host, Prime Minister Mark Carney, focusing on trade relations, security concerns, and critical mineral resources.

"Australia and Canada know we’re stronger when we work together. That’s how we create opportunity and support security in the world," Albanese emphasized.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also participating in the summit as a guest, further underlining the event’s global significance.

The G7 coalition includes the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States, alongside the European Union.

This year’s summit, marking the 50th anniversary of the first G7 meeting, is being hosted in Alberta and runs through Monday and Tuesday.
