Russia, Ukraine Conclude New Prisoner Exchange Deal

(MENAFN) On Thursday, both Russia and Ukraine acknowledged that a fresh exchange of captives had been carried out, following arrangements made during the second session of in-person peace discussions held in Istanbul earlier this month.

Ukrainian Leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on X, “Today, warriors of our Armed Forces, National Guard, and Border Guard Service are back home … This is already the second stage of bringing back severely wounded and seriously ill warriors.”

He also emphasized that Kyiv is persisting in its efforts to secure the return of Ukrainian nationals currently detained by Russia.

Zelenskyy went on to express gratitude to “everyone” contributing to the realization of these exchanges.

In a separate announcement via Telegram, Russia’s Defense Ministry also verified the handover, noting that a contingent of its soldiers had been repatriated in return for a group of Ukrainian military personnel.

“Currently, Russian servicemen are on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, where they are receiving the necessary psychological and medical assistance,” the ministry's statement read.

It also mentioned that these individuals would later be moved to Russia for further care and recuperation.

Neither nation disclosed the total number of individuals included in this exchange.

The second round of negotiations between the two countries took place in Istanbul on June 2, following an earlier meeting in the same Turkish city on May 16.
