Mongolian Premier Resigns After Losing Vote

(MENAFN) Mongolian Premier Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene resigned following a defeat in a vote of confidence held by the parliament, as reported in a statement issued by the legislative body on Tuesday.

The State Great Khural revealed that during a plenary session on Monday, 44 out of 82 members present supported the motion, which fell short of the required majority of at least 64 votes to succeed.

“Since the draft resolution was not approved, the resolution on considering the Prime Minister of Mongolia as resigned was adopted,” the statement explained.

Furthermore, it clarified that based on the resolution, Oyun-Erdene was directed to maintain his responsibilities until a successor is appointed.

After the secret ballot results were announced, Oyun-Erdene addressed the parliament, expressing that it was a privilege to serve the Mongolian population “during difficult international times such as the pandemic, war, and tariffs.”

According to the statement, he highlighted that although “the power in the palace is weakening today,” the hopes of the citizens remain very different, adding that “the network of interests woven like a spider's web will not overcome the people.”

The statement also noted that Oyun-Erdene defended his record before the vote but admitted he had devoted “too much time on big projects and paid little attention to social and political issues.”
