Lee Jae-myung Assumes Presidency of South Korea

(MENAFN) Lee Jae-myung officially assumed the presidency of South Korea on Wednesday, following a decisive win in the country’s unexpected snap elections, according to reports from local media.

The new president took his oath at an inauguration ceremony held at Seoul’s National Assembly, as detailed by a local news agency.

Lee’s election on Tuesday marked a significant political shift, with the snap vote called after former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.

According to official figures, Lee garnered more than 49% of the popular vote, outpacing Kim Moon-soo, the candidate from the outgoing People Power Party, who captured 41.15%.

In total, Lee secured upwards of 17 million votes in this pivotal election.
