Ukraine Executes Attack on Russian Bomber Bases

(MENAFN) Ukraine's armed forces carried out a "large-scale" offensive targeting Russian territory, as reported by state-controlled media on Sunday.

The strike, which employed drones across multiple areas, is said to have resulted in the destruction of more than 40 long-range bomber aircraft.

Among the regions affected was Irkutsk in Siberia, located over 4,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian frontier.

According to Ukraine's official news outlet, the nation’s Security Service (SBU) launched a “large-scale special operation” under the codename Spider Web.

The mission focused on eliminating aircraft utilized by the Kremlin in nighttime assaults on Ukrainian urban centers.

Sources within the SBU indicated that the drones specifically aimed at planes involved in offensive actions against Ukraine.

The report suggested that in excess of 40 bomber jets were successfully impacted during the mission. It also emphasized that the planning phase for the "operation" extended over a period exceeding 18 months.

Four separate airbases were struck simultaneously during the operation—Olenya, Ivanovo, Dyagilevo, and Belaya.

The Belaya base, in particular, is situated in the Irkutsk region of Siberia, whose central city lies over 4,300 kilometers (approximately 2,670 miles) from Ukraine’s border.

The same source labeled the "operation" as "extremely complex" due to the intricacies involved in logistics.

Initially, drones were smuggled into Russian territory and subsequently concealed within mobile wooden shelters. These enclosures were designed to be opened remotely before the drones were deployed.
