Nicusor Dan Assumes Romania’s Presidency
Delivering his first speech as head of state, Dan underscored the urgent need for “fundamental change” while committing to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law. He urged the public to sustain “positive pressure” on government institutions to accelerate reform and vowed to listen attentively to citizens’ concerns.
“Romanian society has proven itself to be alive and strong,” Dan declared. “I will be a president open to the voice of society and working as a partner with society.”
Dan, an independent politician aged 55, claimed victory in the May 18 presidential runoff with 53.6% of the vote, defeating George Simion, the head of the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians.
Following the ceremony, Dan was scheduled to head to the Cotroceni Presidential Palace to assume the role from interim President Ilie Bolojan.
In line with the Romanian constitution, presidential elections occur every five years, and presidents may serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.
