Nigerian Army Dismantles Nineteen Oil Theft Refineries

(MENAFN) The Nigerian military announced on Sunday a decisive crackdown on illegal crude oil refining in the Niger Delta, shutting down 19 unauthorized refineries as part of a nationwide campaign to combat rampant petroleum theft.

Lieut. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, acting deputy director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, confirmed that the operation, which unfolded between May 19 and 25, successfully confiscated approximately 589,000 liters of refined petroleum products and resulted in the detention of 20 suspects.

“Operations against crude oil theft in the Niger Delta continue with recorded successes,” he stated, highlighting the ongoing military efforts in the volatile region.

Petroleum theft and pipeline sabotage inflicted staggering losses on Nigeria, costing over $3 billion in 2023 alone, according to Senator Ned Nwoko.

Holding about 37 billion barrels in proven reserves—equivalent to roughly 3.1% of the world’s supply—Nigeria ranks eighth globally in oil reserves and sixth in exports.

Despite its vast resources, the Niger Delta remains a hotspot for frequent sabotage, armed conflicts, and kidnappings linked to the oil industry. These challenges stem largely from local communities’ grievances over exclusion from oil wealth, lack of development, and environmental degradation.
