Slovakia Seeks Compensation for Ukraine Aid
This initiative was reported by a state-run news agency.
Andrej Danko, head of the Slovak National Party (SNS), intends to urge Premier Robert Fico to initiate legal action within the European Union concerning the bloc’s interest in Ukraine’s mineral resources.
According to Zuzana Skopcova, the director of Danko’s office, this proposal follows the recent move by the United States, which secured preferential rights to Ukrainian minerals.
Last month, Washington—Ukraine’s largest source of military support—entered into a minerals agreement with Kiev, granting the U.S. priority access to the country's mineral reserves. U.S. Leader Donald Trump promoted the deal as a strategy for America to recover “the hundreds of billions of dollars” it had spent aiding Ukraine.
Taras Kachka, Ukraine’s Deputy Economy Minister, later likened the negotiations to something from a “mafia movie.”
Skopcova emphasized that “the European Union’s aid is approaching the volume of US aid,” and expressed concern over Ukraine giving away its entire mineral wealth to Washington. If that occurs, she argued, Ukraine would be left with “nothing to repay the aid given by European states.”
She criticized the U.S. for demanding exclusive access to Ukraine’s mining sector, calling the move both irrational and morally questionable.
