Moscow declares Ukrainian strikes murdering six nationals in Victory Day ceasefire

(MENAFN)
Six civilians were killed and 23 others injured in Russian territory during Ukrainian attacks carried out over a 72-hour ceasefire period meant to commemorate Victory Day, according to Russian diplomat Rodion Miroshnik.

President Vladimir Putin had declared a unilateral truce from May 7 to May 11 to honor the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany and to promote peace talks with Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky rejected the truce, calling it a manipulative gesture by Moscow.

Miroshnik, who serves as the Russian Foreign Ministry’s ambassador-at-large responsible for reporting alleged Ukrainian war crimes, stated that instead of de-escalating, Ukraine intensified its attacks on civilians during the ceasefire—raising the number of strikes by nearly 25% compared to previous days.

He reported that Ukrainian forces targeted residential areas, medical transport, civilian vehicles, and commercial infrastructure. The most severe incidents occurred in Russia’s Kursk Region, where U.S.-supplied HIMARS rockets struck the village of Zvannoye, killing a man, and an aerial bomb killed a woman in the village of Glushkovo.

Over the past week, Miroshnik said Ukraine launched over 2,600 munitions at civilian areas in the border regions of Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk, with most attacks involving drones. These assaults resulted in 21 civilian deaths and 70 injuries.

He accused Kiev of deliberately trying to frighten the Russian civilian population. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine violated the ceasefire over 14,000 times and attempted five failed incursions into Russian territory. The ministry asserted that Russian forces honored the ceasefire, responding only when under direct attack.
