Kiev tries fresh incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region
Ukrainian troops launched a fresh cross-border offensive into Russia’s Kursk Region on Monday, targeting multiple areas including the villages of Tetkino and Novy Put. However, by Wednesday, the assault had failed to yield any meaningful territorial gains, with Ukrainian forces reportedly suffering significant losses in both personnel and equipment.
According to Igor Kimakovsky, an official with the Donetsk People’s Republic, Ukrainian units have spent two days conducting reconnaissance and attempting to breach Russian minefields and engineering barriers near Tetkino and Novy Put to force an entry.
Videos circulating online suggest Ukrainian troops used various breaching vehicles—including the Soviet IMR-2, German Wisent 1, and the UR-77 Meteorit—to dismantle Russian border defenses like mines and concrete barricades. These vehicles were targeted and disabled by Russian FPV drones and subsequently abandoned.
Attempts to rescue the stranded crews using quad bikes were also unsuccessful, as some of the rescue teams were struck by drones. In addition, Ukrainian armored vehicles, including a US-supplied M1117 armored car, were destroyed while trying to capitalize on the cleared paths.
While some Ukrainian units briefly entered the outskirts of Tetkino, occupying a few residential buildings close to the border, they were quickly subjected to intense artillery and airstrikes and were eventually forced to retreat.
Near Novy Put, Ukrainian breaching vehicles again failed to penetrate Russian defenses. One IMR-2 hit a landmine while crossing an anti-tank ditch, followed by an armored vehicle that was destroyed by drone strikes. Ukrainian forces appeared to favor quad bikes for rapid troop deployment in the open, but even this tactic proved ineffective. A convoy of around ten bikes en route to Novy Put was wiped out by artillery fire, as seen in thermal footage shared online.
The incursion marks another unsuccessful attempt by Kiev to breach Russian territory, with Moscow maintaining control over the region.
