Brazil’s Lula requests from Putin to negotiate with Ukraine

(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced plans to personally encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend upcoming peace negotiations with Ukraine, scheduled for Thursday in Istanbul, Türkiye.

The talks were proposed by Putin last week as an opportunity for direct negotiations with Kiev, without any preconditions. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has expressed interest in participating but insists that Russia must first agree to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire—a demand Moscow has so far refused. Zelensky has also made Putin's in-person attendance a condition for his own participation.

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, Lula said he would press the Russian leader to join the talks during his visit to Moscow, quipping, “It doesn’t cost me anything to say: ‘Hey, comrade Putin, go to Istanbul to negotiate, damn it’.”

Reports from Russian media confirm that Lula had arrived in Moscow after his visit to China. Earlier, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira received a call from a senior Ukrainian official, reportedly asking Lula to speak with Putin about the talks in Türkiye.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to confirm whether a meeting between Lula and Putin was scheduled, stating that any confirmed talks would be promptly announced.

Lula said he had already discussed a possible ceasefire with Putin during the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9. According to Lula, Putin expressed openness to discussing peace.

CNN Brasil previously reported that Lula had offered to mediate between Russia and Ukraine during his conversation with Putin. On Tuesday, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga posted on X that he had spoken with Vieira, urging Brazil to use its diplomatic influence to help bring both leaders to the negotiating table in Istanbul.
