Palestinian Council Urges Protection for Journalists

(MENAFN) The Palestinian National Council, the supreme legislative authority of the broader Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), appealed on Sunday for urgent safeguards for media personnel in light of increasing Israeli aggression toward reporters in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

In a formal declaration released ahead of Arab Media Day, the council asserted, “The Israeli occupation is fully responsible for its crimes against journalists.”

It emphasized that, “Assaults against journalists are a deliberate attempt to silence the voice of Palestine, and annihilate its narrative.”

This denunciation underscores a growing concern over efforts to suppress Palestinian perspectives.

Based on data from Palestinian sources, a minimum of 211 Palestinian journalists have lost their lives in Israeli offensives in the Gaza Strip since October 2023.

The council described this year’s commemoration as occurring during one of the most tragic episodes in modern Palestinian memory, stating that their people have faced over 18 months of what it labeled as "fascist and organized terrorist aggression."

The statement further noted that Palestinian media professionals have become “the direct targets of the warplanes and missiles, in a flagrant violation of all humanitarian laws.”

This deliberate targeting highlights the perilous environment journalists are working in as they report from conflict zones.

Lastly, the council condemned what it called a troubling lack of global response, adding that "these crimes are being committed amid suspicious international silence and in flagrant defiance of international resolutions, notably the 4th Geneva Convention of 1949, which stipulates the protection of civilians, including journalists, during wars.”

The message calls for greater accountability and international enforcement of humanitarian protections for journalists.
