France, UK rebrand probable army placement in Ukraine

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that France and the UK will continue advocating for the deployment of a military force to Ukraine, particularly after a potential peace agreement with Russia. This proposal, aimed at providing security guarantees to Ukraine, has faced resistance from several EU countries.

Macron referred to the plan as a "reassurance force" and emphasized that it would be part of a broader coalition of countries willing to offer military support to Ukraine. However, he acknowledged that the proposal has not gained unanimous backing within the EU. Despite this, a French-British delegation is set to visit Kiev for further discussions on the plan.

The "coalition of the willing" initially coined by the US during the Iraq war now includes nations that have expressed willingness to continue supporting Ukraine militarily. To establish such a force, however, consensus among EU members and a potential UN mandate would be required.

Several EU countries, including Italy, Germany, and Hungary, have voiced opposition, fearing escalation and financial strain. Russia has strongly condemned the idea of NATO countries deploying peacekeepers in Ukraine, warning that such moves could lead to direct conflict between Russia and NATO.

Meanwhile, the US has brokered a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, with Moscow accusing Ukraine of violating it by targeting energy infrastructure. European leaders, especially from southern EU states, have also expressed concerns over an €800 billion military spending plan, fearing it could worsen their economic situation.
